This month's featured grantees appear in articles about Wal-Mart's generic drug plan, a conference on HSAs, and AcademyHealth's National Health Policy Forum.

December 2006

Bruce Stuart, Ph.D., professor of drug therapy and aging at the University of Maryland-Baltimore, was quoted in a November 27, 2006 article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that examined Wal-Mart's plan to offer $4 generic prescription drugs. The article details Wal-Mart's expansion of their innovative discount program to eleven additional states, including Wisconsin. Stuart noted that "he did not expect many people to head to Wal-Mart to save a few dollars on a generic medication." He concluded, however, that "it is significant because it has shaken up the market."

Stephen Parente, Ph.D., associate professor of finance at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, presented his HCFO-funded work on December 7, 2006 on consumer directed health plans at HSA 2006: The Cure for Modern Healthcare conference. Parente was the featured speaker for a session titled, "Does Theory Follow Practice? Comparing the Effectiveness of a Consumer Directed Health Plan with Traditional Cost Sharing in Controlling Medical Care Use and Cost."

Harold Luft, Ph.D., Caldwell B. Esselstyn Professor of Health Policy and Health Economics and director of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California , San Francisco , will be a featured speaker at AcademyHealth's National Health Policy Conference (NHPC) on February 12, 2007. Luft will be presenting "Prius-style Health Care Delivery." For more information, please visit the NHPC Web site.
